Wow this is SO fascinating! Reading this, it seems like SO much has changed, but also not much has changed...if you know what I mean? They prey on the same fears that exist now. Quite inspired to draw these ads tbh, they are amazing.

Exactly that - it’s changed but not as much as we think it has, which is probably what they thought back then too! You should totally draw them xx

I'm a huge fan of vintage ads. (Clearly, as I use them in my own Substack.) They're simultaneously hilarious, terrifying, degrading, fascinating, ridiculous, historically significant, dangerous, and a learning experience.

They really are - I'm always shocked when I find a new one that's totally mad, but also slightly terrified that we're in a similar state now without really realising it

YES! Especially with the rise of trad wives.

I forgot to mention how much I love Bésame Cosmetics. They recreate make-up from different eras using historic samples and a lot of research. One of my favourites is their Victory Red lipstick, from an original 1941 shade -- speaking of Beauty as Duty!

I think you meant to say "may" instead of "make" in the tagline?
