Thank you for this. I found it really interesting. I am so often torn between loathing the monetisation of cultural events but also gladdened by the spotlight and raising of awareness it offers them. I suppose I just hope that when the “trend” has passed and the money makers move onto something else, that it leaves in its wake , at the very least, a little more understanding and embracing of non-Christian, non-white culture. Or perhaps
I saw something on instagram this morning about Louboutin creating a range of 'Diwali inspired' footwear. Honestly, my gut reaction to what I saw was a resounding 'F-OFF' - it was badly pastiched 'indian-ish' patterns and copies of traditional footwear. Something in the copy about how much they were inspired by India. COPIED would be a more accurate word. I'd love to know what you think of it, maybe I'm being harsh, I don't know.
It is exciting to see more South Asian owned brands emerging, thanks for sharing them. I'm always excited to discover more! I really want to buy Live Tinted but its impossible to get to Europe without extortionate delivery fees, sadly.
I've heard of Diwali for the first time last year when my colleagues dressed up in the most gorgeous dresses I've ever seen and prepared a spread of delicious food for everyone to enjoy. That's one way to get me ;) reading about your experience with the 'afterthought' gifts, is there something culturally appropriate that you'd recommend outsider people to look into, when it comes to Diwali gifts and/or celebration?
